A new SLM 280 for the additive manufacturing factory
Over the past weeks, our first SLM 280 was delivered and activated in our machine inventory. This plant was created by the historic German company with a huge build chamber specifically designed to be a tool for the production of final components that exploit the advantages of additive manufacturing.
Additive manufacturing is no more limited to the realization of prototypes. 3D metal printing pushes innovation even further, thus becoming a state-of-the-art technology to create final functional pieces with unique features.
Production with aluminium alloy AlSi7Mg0.6 (A357), research and development with Scalmalloy®
The factory offers a wide range of machinery for metal additive manufacturing: thus plants focus on individual materials and resources are used for experiments.
The new SLM 280 has been loaded with the AlSi7Mg0.6 (A357) alloy, which is generally used for the aviation production line and aerospace industries to produce final critical pieces.
Great attention to details and to perfect machining becomes an essential requirement to allow for precise and minimally-invasive subsequent secondary processing.
All this keeping in mind that in these fields it is necessary to “freeze” the production process, so as to make it perfectly repeatable in the future.
Scalmalloy® is the unique alloy developed by Airbus APWorks.
We are experimenting and defining processes in compliance with UNI EN 9100:2009, to exploit the height of the build chamber also with this high-performing alloy which combines the extreme lightness of sintered aluminium with a specific resistance which is similar to that of titanium.
The vertical axis can be further exploited for design projects
Professional designers assume that in additive manufacturing "the more Z axis coverage is adopted, higher quality is obtained" and this is not so far from reality.
